Tour Plan

Day 01 Negombo

Before heading to the northern peninsula, take the chance to explore Negombo.

Since the resort town is close to the Bandaranaike International Airport, you can refresh and rejuvenate after the long flight. Enjoy the cool breeze at the beach and indulge in the mouthwatering seafood you can enjoy in Negombo.

If you need any supplies, you can shop for it after a city tour to visit some of the major attractions in the area.

Day 02 Pinnawala and Anuradhapura

The next stage of the journey takes you to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. You can interact with the resident elephants and admire the gentleness of these giant mammals.

Afterwards, you will head to Anuradhapura. The ancient temples, ruins, monasteries and parks in the old town give you an insight into the town's pivotal role in Sri Lankan history. You can visit a giant man-made tank and learn more about the agriculture and irrigation practices of the island. You can even enjoy a local version of freshwater fish curry if you wish.

Day 03 Jaffna

The Dutch Fort in Jaffna is a massive structure overlooking the Jaffna Lagoon. The 400-something-year-old fort remains in good condition, although some sections have undergone renovations in later years. The sprawling star-shaped fort and its moat are a fantastic attraction to explore.

You will then visit the Nallur Kandaswami Hindu Temple, one of the most famous kovils in Jaffna. Dedicated to the Hindu god of war, love and beauty - Lord Murugan, the kovil is a magnificent example of Dravidian architecture. It is immediately recognisable by its grand arches and vibrant hues.

Day 04 Jaffna

Take a boat ride to Nagadeepa. The tiny island is one of many islands that dot the sea around the Jaffna peninsula and has two religious sites of equal importance - the Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya (a Buddhist temple) and the Nagapooshani Amman Kovil (a Hindu temple).

Afterwards, you can visit one of the most significant landmarks on the peninsula, the Elephant Pass. The causeway spans the shallow lagoon that separates the peninsula from the rest of the island.

Day 05 Jaffna

The Sangiliyan statue is a monument to the last king of Jaffna - King Cankili II. The original statue suffered damage during the Civil War, and the current gold-plated statue was built in 2009 after the hostilities ended. Visit the statue and learn the intricate and complex history behind the seemingly innocuous effigy.

The Jaffna Archeological Museum is your next stop. The rare collection of antiquities on display consists of Buddhist and Hindu artefacts and those uncovered during excavations in and around Jaffna. Afterwards, you can spend the rest of the day at Casuarina Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the peninsula.

Day 06 Nilaveli and Trincomalee

The Nilaveli Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Sri Lanka's East Coast. The pristine water and the wide swathes of white sand create an ideal location to rest and relax.

Once you've had fun at the beach, head to Trincomalee to visit Fort Frederick - a colonial fortress now under the maintenance and care of the Sri Lankan Military. You can admire the colonial buildings and the interesting stories attached to each.

Day 07 Trincomalee

Pay your respects at the Thirukoneswaram Kovil in Trincomalee, a prominent kovil in the area. Perched on the edge of a cliff, the kovil offers dramatic views of the Indian Ocean and is a treasure trove of historical and religious stories. The Shri Pathrakali Amman Hindu temple is one of the most striking temples within the kovil complex.

In the afternoon, you can visit the Kanniya Hot Water Springs and enjoy the warmth of the water from these natural pools. Then, visit the British War Cemetery, which carries a piece of the island’s history tied to World War II.

Day 08 Kantale and Sigiriya

Take a tour of the Kantale Sugar Factory, once a major location for sugar production that is now being revived.

Afterwards, travel to Sigiriya, where you can climb the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress and enjoy the ingenuity and craftsmanship of ancient Sri Lankans. The rock was a strategic defense for the palace that once sat on its summit and you can still see the telltale signs of the luxuries available at the palace as you climb the rock. For instance, the Sigiriya frescoes depict beautiful court ladies, perhaps drawn for the pleasure of the king.

Day 09 Dambulla

In the morning, visit the largest Buddhist cave complex in Sri Lanka - the Dambulla Cave Temple. The temple dates back to the Anuradhapura kingdom and complicated history. There is a stunning collection of cave paintings and Buddha statues at the temple, which is one of its biggest draws.

Afterwards, you can enjoy the day at leisure.

Day 10 Kandy

Take a walk through the well-landscaped Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya. The vast garden has several sections that offer different experiences that you can enjoy.

In the evening, you can enjoy a whirlwind city tour of Kandy and get to know the capital of the hill country.

Day 11 Kandy
Day 12 Colombo

Visit Colombo and embark on a city tour. As the commercial capital of the island, it is a vibrant city that combines contemporary conveniences with old-world charm. The many malls, boutique shops and galleries also offer you the chance to indulge in some shopping before you leave for the airport in time for your international flight back to your home country.
