Info

Founded in the fifth century BCE, Anuradhapura became the island’s capital in the fourth century BCE, the kingdom lasting until the 11th century CE, when the capital shifted due to foreign invasions. The city is one of the oldest inhabited places on the island and is renowned for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient civilisation. Theravada Buddhism (one of the oldest schools of Buddhism) spread throughout the island during the infancy of the Anuradhapura kingdom. You can see some of the ancient monasteries and temple complexes built by the kings and the Sri Maha Bodhi complex which contains a sacred fig tree with a history that spans more than two millennia.
